The resulting Unimog S 404 was compact, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase and a payload of 1.5 tonnes. Its 2,195 cc six-cylinder petrol engine produced 82 hp. Some vehicles were armed with an MG3 machine gun mounted on a special rotating ring mount known as the Drehringlafette. Its tubular structure was installed above the cab on support brackets attached to both sides of the vehicle. The system allowed the gunner to engage targets through a full 360-degree arc.
